‘BRZRKR’: Keanu Reeves Turns Comic-Book Writer For BOOM! Studios’ Story On An Immortal Mercenary

Keanu Reeves’s contribution to 21st century pop-culture is, for lack of a better word, excellent! He has shown us that time travel can be fun via Bill and Ted’s adventures, taught that action heroes don’t need to be alpha-males with six-pack abs via Speed and Point Break, gave us an awesome comic-book movie via Constantine, revolutionised an actor’s involvement in the action choreography and stunt work via The Matrix series, and revitalised the action genre with his John Wick series. The last one has spawned a TV series. Additionally, he’s in a video-game called Cyberpunk 2077. And just when we think he’s done influencing, he has entered the comic-book domain.

BOOM! Studios recently announced BRZRKR, a twelve-issue limited series that will be written by the one and only Keanu Reeves. Yes, it is his debut as a comic-book writer. Working alongside him will be New York Times bestselling writer Matt Kindt (Folklords, Bang!) and acclaimed artist Alessandro Vitti (Marvel’s Secret Warriors) , colourist Bill Crabtree (BRPD), and letterer Clem Robins (Hellboy). Here’s a brief description about what the story is going to be all about:

“The man known only as Berzerker is half-mortal and half-God, cursed and compelled to violence…even at the sacrifice of his sanity. But after wandering the world for centuries, Berzerker may have finally found a refuge – working for the U.S. government to fight the battles too violent and too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, Berzerker will be granted the one thing he desires – the truth about his endless blood-soaked existence…and how to end it.”

Reeves has said,

“I have loved comics since I was a young kid and they have been a significant influence on me artistically. To have the chance to create BRZRKR and collaborate with legends in the industry like writer Matt Kindt, artist Alessandro Vitti, color artist Bill Crabtree, letterer Clem Robins, and conceptual/cover artist Rafael Grampá – along with the great folks at BOOM! Studios – is a dream come true.”

Co-writer Kindt has said,

“The best collaborations have each partner bringing something unique to the table. Wth BRZRKR we mixed a potent cocktail of all the things that we love: the tale of an immortal warrior laced with history, conspiracies, spirituality, and a gigantic helping of bonkers action and violence — all with intense purpose and ultimately a heartbreaking discovery.”

Artist Vitti has said,

“I was visiting New York when BOOM! Studios reached out to me about BRZRKR and as soon as I saw that I would be working with Matt Kindt and Keanu Reeves, I was jumping with excitement because I knew that this would be an incredible experience. And I was right! This series has everything I love to draw, and I can’t wait for it to hit stores so we can share it with all of you!”

Everything about Berzerker feels like John Wick on steroids. And since Reeves plays Wick so well, I don’t think he’ll have any trouble getting into the mind of an exaggerated version of that character. According to USA Today, he is even ready to play a live-action version of Berzerker and he has said that, “It’s a really fun story so if it’s not me, hopefully someone can play it”. Classic Keanu Reeves right there. Well, the comic is coming out in October 2020. So, if that works out, maybe we’ll get to see a movie or series on it (Psst! BOOM! Studios does have a first-look deal with Netflix).
