‘Constantine’ Director And Keanu Reeves Both Want A Sequel. Here’s Why It Isn’t Happening
Believe it or not but last year I wrote an article about why this Is The Time To Green-light A Keanu Reeves-led ‘Point Break’ And Constantine Sequel. There are multiple reasons for that with one of the biggest ones being the resurgence in Reeves’s popularity post the success of the John Wick franchise and also because his iteration, despite not being love by comic-book purists, is canon. And now news has dropped that the director of Constantine, Francis Lawrence, wants it to happen.
I will admit that Constantine wasn’t a huge success because comic-book movies weren’t what it was back in 2005, John Constantine wasn’t a huge character, and its departure from the original comic-book version of the character failed to draw in his hardcore fans. However, over time, Reeves’s version has gotten a lot of love, especially from me, and the movie itself has been lauded for being so bloody audacious and creative with its practical and visual effects. That said, it isn’t enough to give it the sequel treatment, according to Lawrence (via Slashfilm),
“I think we all wanted to do it. It was successful enough. We wanted to make a responsible, more R-rated movie. By responsible, I mean we’d make a movie that wouldn’t cost quite as much as the original, which we thought was going to be PG-13. We worked on the sequel for a while. It was tricky to come up with where to take it. What I really liked about the first one was it was a really personal story, so I thought it’d be a mistake to get caught up in the supernatural gobblygook. The idea of a personal story was really interesting, and that was the hard thing to come across. We have been talking about it recently. It’s always stuck with all of us because we all love the movie, and especially realizing there’s a real cult following for this movie, it’d be fun to make.”
He further added that,
“Keanu, Akiva, and I have actually talked about it. Unfortunately, I don’t even remember who has it, but with all these shared universes that exist now, with Constantine being a part of Vertigo, which is a part of DC, people have plans for these shared universes. You know, possibly different Constantines and things like that. Right now, we don’t have that character available to us for TV or movies, which is a bummer. We all investigated it, but I think it’s kind of crazy when you have Keanu, who would love to do another Constantine, and us wanting to do another Constantine, and people are like, ‘Uh, no, we got other plans.’ We’ll see what happens.”
It’s not difficult to make a Constantine sequel right now, given how different iterations of the same character are co-existing on various platforms i.e. movies or TV shows. The movie left the door wide open for so many stories to be told through the eyes of a John Constantine whose already mind-melting world-view has been changed some more. People are ready for Biblical and cosmic stories that are told honestly. And Keanu Reeves is the hottest name in the business right now. So, after taking all these factors into consideration, if someone is sitting on the IP only to reboot it a few months or years later then, sorry for being crude, they’re absolutely dumb.
Director Francis Lawrence wants a Constantine sequel. Keanu Reeves wants a Constantine sequel. Fans want a Constantine sequel. So, just give them a goddamn sequel!
