‘The New Mutants’ Comic-Con Teaser: Can This Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy Film Release Already?

0 1

Sit down, kids. It is time for a history lesson. The first trailer for The New Mutants came out in 2017. The film was originally set to be released on April 13, 2018. Then it was delayed to February 22, 2019 to avoid a clash with Deadpool 2. Then it was moved to August 2, 2019, to avoid a clash with Dark Phoenix. Then it was delayed to April 3, 2020, by Disney after they acquired Fox. Then it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And still the filmmakers haven’t learnt a lesson and are trying for a theatrical release date i.e August 28, 2020. *sigh*

Ahead of the stay-at-home Comic-Con, Marvel has released yet another teaser to remind us that this movie actually exists. It has Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage, and Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot. And all of them are stuck in a mental institution of sorts which they’re trying to escape while fighting some external and internal demons.

See, I won’t lie. Going by what I’ve seen via the tons of trailers and teaser The New Mutants has received, it looks dope AF. There’s magic. There’s horror. There’s action. The actors are great. The CGI and practical effects look crazy. And the story also sounds new and a fresh addition to the superhero sub-genre. That’s exactly why I want this movie to just release online and be done with it. Why try for an August release when the pandemic has no signs of stopping? I’m sure it would’ve gotten more buzz if it would’ve released on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video or any of the other OTT platforms than it is going to get if and when it releases theatrically.
